Service Opportunities through PLU
Lab Coat and Goggle Sales
2 hours per session
PLU funds its numerous projects through the sale of lab coats and goggles during the first week of each quarter. After these initial sales, lab coats and goggles may be purchased from the laboratory program assistant.
Science in the Classroom (SITC)
3 hours per class
The flagship service program for Northwestern PLU is our science outreach program SITC, co-awarded as the "Best Educational Outreach Program " at the 2007-2008 Graduate Student Leaders and Associations Awards Banquet. With more than 50 graduate student and postdoc volunteers participating annually, we are able to work in small groups of 4-5 students per tutor, with each child able to perform his/her own experiments. We began in February 2006, teaching four 90 minute lessons per grade over the course of the school year and currently teach six lessons a year to both 3rd and 4th grade classes (including Special Needs and ESL sections). Each lesson has a specific theme, such as "Pressure and Gasses", "Electricity", and "Simple Machines." At the end of the year, students travel to Northwestern for a day of exciting (and often explosive science)!
Volunteering at Recruitment Weekends
1+ hours, depending on the form of help
In March and April, the Northwestern chemistry department hosts visit weekends for accepted students to come and visit the department. Volunteers are needed to help set up and clean up after the poster session and escort students to/from their hotel, Silverman, and social events.
