Edmund W. Gelewitz Award
This award is presented annually to two outstanding senior graduate students in chemistry. The endowment was established in 1953 in honor of Edmund W. Gelewitz. From these funds, two $500 awards are set aside for senior graduate students who demonstrate excellence in research and are active in the Northwestern chemistry department and the greater chemical community.
Eligibility
All graduate students who have completed at least three years of graduate study in chemistry at Northwestern are eligible for this award. Please note that your application indicates a willingness to serve on the Gelewitz Selection Committee the following year, unless you defend your thesis before that time.
Application
An application (fill out this form) highlighting both research and service is submitted before March 8th (Deadline for 2024: Friday, March 8rd at 11:59 pm). The application consists of:
A selection committee comprised of graduate students (including at least one former recipient) and the PLU Awards Chair select up to 10 semi-finalists from the applicants. Each of these semi-finalists is invited to give a research seminar (15 minutes, ACS standard) in front of the same committee.
Up to 5 finalists are then chosen for an interview conducted by a three-member faculty panel and the PLU Awards Chair, to assess the candidates and determine the two award winners. The interviews are formal in nature and approximately 10 minutes in length. The winners are announced at the annual Marple-Schweitzer Memorial Lecture in May.
